If your towels come out smelling musty, the problem is usually not your detergent. It is the machine itself: a warm, damp box that washes everything except itself. The good news is that cleaning it takes about 20 minutes of actual work, and most of that is the machine running on its own.
The quick version
- Wipe the door gasket with white vinegar and a microfiber cloth, folding the rubber back to reach inside the groove.
- Pour two cups of white vinegar in the drum and run the hottest, longest cycle, empty.
- Sprinkle half a cup of baking soda in the drum and run a second short hot cycle.
- Pull out the detergent drawer and wash it in the sink.
- Clean the drain filter (the little door at the bottom front). Keep a towel ready, water will come out.
Front loaders: the gasket is the whole story
That grey rubber ring around the door traps water, lint, coins and the occasional sock, and it is where the smell lives. Fold it back and you will probably find a dark film inside the groove. Vinegar and a cloth handle it; an old toothbrush helps in the corners. If you see black spots that will not wipe off, that is mold that has rooted in the rubber, and the honest fix is a new gasket.
Top loaders
Same logic, easier access. Run the hottest cycle with vinegar, follow with the baking soda cycle, then wipe under the rim of the tub where residue collects. If your machine has an agitator, detergent scum builds up around its base, so give it a scrub too.
The five minute monthly routine
Once the machine is reset, keeping it fresh is easy: wipe the gasket after the last load of the week, leave the door and the detergent drawer open between washes so everything dries, and run one empty hot cycle with vinegar a month. Use the right dose of detergent too. More soap does not mean cleaner clothes, it means more residue for bacteria to feed on.
When the smell will not leave
If you have done all of the above twice and the musty smell still comes back within days, the buildup is usually behind the drum where no home method reaches, or the drain hose is looped wrong and holding water. At that point it is a repair call rather than a cleaning problem.
